Few Helpful Tips for Whisky Tasting

Whisky is certainly a delightful drink for any party and scotch whiskies have never failed to give the enthusiasm that people except from an alcoholic drink. Be it a wedding ceremony or a birthday party or just a simple get-together of friends, whisky is a perfect drink. In Scotland, it was customary for the bride and grooms to drink whisky as the symbol of togetherness.

In bars and restaurants, whisky is served as a high-class drink. All major contracts between corporate and even countries get completed with a sip of whisky, and it is served as a symbol of everlasting friendship. In a bar or restaurant, you would have come across various types of alcohols like Gin, Vodka, Wine, Beer. You may be familiar with wine tasting and beer tasting, but whisky tasting is rare, and you would have hardly come across such an event before.

Whisky tasting was unthinkable because of its high alcohol content, and it is not easy to taste whisky without adding any mixture to it. Many scotch whiskies are 80 proofs, and that means that they have more than 40% alcohol content, and there are even 100 proof whiskies.

In the case of wine and beer, their alcohol content is less than 15%, and it is easy to taste its real flavour. Higher the alcohol content, the burn that you get in your tongue will be more, and that makes whisky tasting difficult. Therefore, the tasting process of whisky is devised in an entirely different manner by the manufacturers.

Whisky is made from various sources, and the taste differs from one ingredient to another. Therefore, whisky tasting requires knowledge about the base ingredient from which a particular type of whisky is made of.

For example, Bourbon is a whisky made mainly from corn and other ingredients is wheat or rye or both. If you have this knowledge about the ingredients, then your mind will prepare itself to process different tastes.

Additionally, you need to know about the process of ageing of alcohol and in the case of Bourbon, they are aged charred barrels made of oak wood. You are likely to get the taste of the wood or sometimes a burnt taste because of the charred barrel.

If your mind is prepared about various ingredients and their possible tastes, it will prepare your senses for perfect whisky tasting irrespective of the alcohol content in it.

Smell the whisky before you go for whisky tasting and the different flavours that your nose get can really make a difference. In the case of spirits, you should smell them in a gentle way, and deep smelling will not work. By deep inhaling, you will only get the burning sensation of the alcohol.

Therefore, gently smell the content from the glass and allow the flavour to enter your nostrils slowly. After this, take a gentle sip, and the whisky tasting will be perfect. Make sure not to swallow the spirit, especially if you are going for multiple tastings.
